Those who decide to breed rabbits, first of all should take care of a comfortable housing for their pets. My husband designed and made a family unit of 3 compartments: on the sides for females, between them – the rabbit-producer (Fig. 1).
The skeleton of the cells is knocked out of pine bars 5×5 cm. The back wall, sides, partitions between the cells, nesting compartments and their doors are made of wide clapboard, which was used to sheathe our house. Cell windows are from a grid with a 2×2 cm cell. The walls between the “male” and “female” compartments have manholes with a plywood gate. Having opened it and slightly pushing the female, we help it to get into the cage to the male or to return back to its section. The floors in the cages are made of 3×2 cm lumber at intervals of 2 cm. In the nesting compartment there is a solid floor of tightly fitted boards.
In the nests between the ceiling and the common roof there are lofts 35 cm high, which females use for rest – small rabbits cannot climb there and do not exhaust mothers with frequent sucking.
Feeders for hay and grass (Fig. 2) are also knocked out of bars, the distance between them is 5 cm. The manger is raised 20 cm above the floor so that the grass is not soiled and trampled.
Feeders for grain and root crops are fixed in the front wall of the cells under the mesh windows. This arrangement is very convenient, because rabbits can not turn them over or overturn. “Semi-automatic” drinkers of the following design are located next door: a bottom of a 5-liter plastic bottle is inserted into a tray made of plywood. In the center of the removable tray lid, a hole is cut for the neck of an inverted 1.5-liter water bottle, and on the left it does not reach the edge by 5 cm (Fig. 3). This is enough for adults to drink without problems, and rabbits protects against involuntary bathing, which could cause a cold. The outer corner-stopper on the bottom fixes the position of the drinker and allows you to remove it for washing. Bottles are pressed to the front wall with aluminum tape at a height of about 15 cm. On hot sunny days, we remove them so that the water does not bloom and the rabbits do not poison themselves.
The parameters of the cage: the height of the front wall – 60 cm, back – 50 cm, depth – 65 cm.
I believe that the main advantage of the described construction is that feed and water are supplied outside. Accordingly, the internal space is not cluttered with dishes and leftover food.
For example: one female brought 11 baby rabbits, and up to 1.5 months of age they did not experience discomfort: there was enough space and access to the feeders remained free.
