How To Make A Convenient Rabbit Cage

Leonid Sudakov from Shklov has been breeding rabbits for over 40 years and collects cages for them according to a special scheme. Thanks to this design, more than 200 rabbits are placed on an area of 24 square meters, and inside the cages it is always dry. What’s the secret?

“For the sake of space saving, I prefer multi-tiered cages for rabbits,” says Leonid Ivanovich, “they are located along three-story walls and take up very little space (photo 1). The frame of the cage, 50 cm wide and 140 cm long, is knocked out of 40×45 mm wooden bars, and I use 18-20 mm thick boards for making walls, roofs, and doors. The floor of wooden slats with a gap between them serves to drain sewage (photo 2, p. 1) In the middle of the cage, I install a door (photo 4, p. 1) to access the Ѵ-shaped barn rabbits (photo 3) made from galvanized mesh, which divides the room into two parts. From the same grid – all viewing windows (photo 4, p. 2)

Along the edges of the cage placed the doors for the pets themselves (photo 4, p. 3). Inside, there are drinking cans on the doors. And in the middle of each half of the cage there is a narrow rectangular door, to which the bunker feeders for rabbits for loose fodders are bolted (photo 2, p. 2; photo 4, p. 4). I collect it from a half of a sewer PVC pipe d 100 mm cut in length (30–40 cm long) and put end caps from wood.

Instead of metal curtains for fixing the doors, I fitted rectangular pieces of a notched chisel on a tree with a conveyor belt (photo 4, item 5), which I nailed with small carnations. The fact is that iron curtains in 2-3 months from ammonia fumes completely rust, and they need to be changed. And if you consider that for one tier you need 13-14 such curtains, then the savings are significant.

Ready cages for rabbits Leonid Sudakov puts on each other.

“Particular attention was paid to the collection of sewage,” says Leonid. – The first cages were built with ceiling slopes and drain trays, using pallets for cages for rabbits. But to remove the slopes and trays on the back wall did not allow a small area of the room. And when placing these parts on the front side of the cage, the hay spilled during feeding sticks to the constantly wet surface of the trays and walls.

Now all the waste is accumulated on the roof of the lower tier – concave in the middle in the form of a shallow trough covered with linoleum (photo 5). Sawdust with a layer of 2-3 cm falls asleep on the roof. Excreta, falling through the cage floor of the upper cage, are absorbed and do not drain – the walls of the lower cage for rabbits remain dry. Sawdust is changed every 8-10 days.
