Rabbit maintenance is a process that requires skill, time and responsibility. Providing animals with good food is half the battle. Another important point is the living conditions. Eared pets need durable and comfortable cages in which they could feel comfortable. Competently designed housing will provide ease of feeding and caring for animals. In case of health problems, they can be effectively treated, as well as timely mating between individuals.
Any cage for rabbits should consist of a robust frame, supports, strong walls, floor and roof. If the owner plans to breed animals, one room will not be enough. The minimum number of cells for breeding is three or four.
There are several types of premises for the maintenance and breeding of rabbits:
- for males;
- for young individuals;
- for female with baby rabbits;
- for animals of large breeds;
- special types of structures (according to Mikhailov, Zolotukhin, Tsvetkov, etc.).
Variants of buildings, depending on the number and specificity of individuals, look different. It can be beautiful houses for several animals or industrial cells with many compartments.
Cages for males
Cages for males are used to separate males from females. It helps control the offspring. The wooden cage is divided into several compartments (it is better if there are three of them). The total length of the structure is 2 m., The length of each compartment is 65-66 cm, depth is 90 cm. The height of the cage along the front part of the wall is 65 cm and the rear. The room is designed for large males who are kept outside. The whole structure is located on an elevation of about 2 m from the ground.
On the door of each compartment there are senniks with lids, so that the rabbits have constant access to green food. Cell floor – rack, boardwalk. There is enough space in each room to hold containers for food and water. If the male is large and active, the feeder can be nailed to the wall and he will not turn it over.
The back wall of the cell is upholstered with folgoisol, and the roof is strengthened with a sheet of corrugated board.
Rabbit cages with cubs
In the house for the rabbit-mother with offspring should be two parts: uterine and aft, separated by a partition. In the septum, a manhole is cut at a height of 10 to 15 cm from the floor so that the kids do not get out. The ideal design of the dwelling for the rabbits provides for the manufacture of a separate master house. It is placed in the uterine part of the cell shortly before caul. The length and depth of the house – 0.4 m, height – 0.2 m.
Among rabbit breeders there is a belief that the bunny rabbit with cubs need not be placed in the mother liquor in the summer and can be limited to an ordinary cage. It is not right. The female will not feel protected, and her condition will negatively affect the baby rabbits. Regardless of the time of year, a closed and cozy space in which the bunny will make itself a nest should be equipped in the queen cell. It is also necessary to take care of the space for walking, enclosed by the front wall in the form of a solid grid.
The frame is made of durable timber, and the walls – of plywood. The cell is divided in two. Each compartment has doors – both from the grid, and from the tree. The roof is covered with corrugated board or slate.
Cages for young
When calculating, you should focus on the area from 0.2 to 0.3 m2 per rabbit.
Adult Rabbit Cages
For two adult rabbits build a house consisting of two branches. The optimal length is from 200 to 240, width is 60-70, height is 70 cm. Two compartments are fenced off by a feeding trough into which hay and grass are laid. To save space, it is recommended to use the design in the form of a two-tier or three-tier shed. Cells are arranged in longline order. We need to make three rectangular frames – for the roof and the floor and fix them with the help of long bars. At the same time, the first rectangular frame is fixed with a calculation on the lower legs up to 30 cm long.
The second frame is fixed to a height of half a meter above the first, and the third – at a height of 10 cm above the second. As a floor for the sector of feeding, usually, a net is used. The galvanized net is fixed to the first and third frames, and the resulting houses are equipped, as usual, with feeders, drinkers and hay.
As for the second rectangular frame, it will become the roof for the lower tier and the tray for the upper. In the middle of two frames fix the box, which can be removed at any time and cleaned of waste falling into it from above.
Cages for rabbits of large breeds
Large breeds of rabbits (for example, giants, rams and Californians) need large housing spaces. The minimum width of the space should be 750, height – 550, and length – 170 cm.
Cages for dwarf rabbits
Dwarf or ornamental rabbits were bred solely for home keeping. Since they inherited the genes of wild ancestors, it is necessary to create comfortable conditions for them to live. Basic requirements for cages for decorative rabbit breeds:
- large space. The animal will be in a cage for a long time, and it must provide the opportunity to climb, run up the stairs, hide in the burrow;
- one piece pallet. Paws of decorative rabbits do not have pads, so it is important that the animal does not hurt. It will also be much more convenient for the host to clean the cage, since the remnants of pet food and pet feces will not be scattered around;
- the absence of colored and sharp elements inside the cell.
Industrial models of Mikhailov and Zolotukhin cells
Industrial cages for rabbits are designed to keep a large number of animals – both outdoors and indoors. Everything is provided in them in order that care of a livestock was convenient, and fluffy small animals felt, "as at home". The most popular among them are the models proposed by the farmers of I.N. Mikhailov and N.I. Zolotukhin.
Model I.N. Mikhailov facilitates the process of caring for animals. Feeders in it fall asleep once or twice a week. Under the cage floor is a pallet, designed in the shape of a large cone. The design is equipped with an automated mechanism that collects all waste in a specially designated container. Thanks to this solution, the rabbit care time is reduced, and the cages always remain clean.
Model N.I. Zolotukhina looks easier. It can be single or double decker. It is often used for keeping young individuals. The peculiarity of such cells is in the external fastening of the feeders to the grid. They are easily removed or tilted for easy cleaning.
The lack of the Zolotukhin model is in the absence of the mother liquor, therefore it is not suitable for winter use. In the summer, the bunny rabbit can acquire offspring on the floor, if she is in time to put hay for the nest.
Tips for building a hand-made cage
If there are no severe frosts in the region, the breeders place the buildings in open space. Place choose dry, without a strong wind. Rabbits are sensitive animals and often suffer from colds. When placing cells in the shed you need to take care of the lighting and screw in a few lamps. They should burn from 8 to 10 hours.
When building a two- or three-tiered shed, it is better to put the cells in two rows – so that their facades are facing each other. Between the rows there should be space for easy access.
Do I need a house with a paddock
On a large plot, you can equip cells with a walk. To do this, in the back wall make the door, and the place for walking looks like a fenced enclosure. Thanks to this opportunity, the rabbits will move more, will not grow fat and will become less sick. If the plot is small, the enclosure is made small using a galvanized grid.
Materials and tools
Rabbit cage is made using the following materials:
- wire mesh with galvanized;
- strong bars for the frame;
- plastic for finishing;
- slate, roofing material, professional flooring.
From the tools you will need a simple set: a hacksaw, a screwdriver, a hammer, accessories.
Feeders and drinkers
A simple trough can be made by attaching a bar inside the cage. It is installed vertically and attached to it two feeding containers. The height and width of each of them is 7 and 30 cm. Two small bars are used as guides. They are fixed above capacity. A plywood frame is made from plywood. Its top is located between the two guide bars, and the bottom is in the tank.
Michael (Ryazan region):
“Designed rabbit cages according to Zolotukhin’s method. The model is simple and convenient, with folding feeders, but without the mother liquor. The number of rabbits in the summer is increasing: I put the rabbit on the floor more hay, and she safely breeds. I am thinking about how to improve this model myself. ”
Rabbit breeding has been doing for a long time. I decided for the sake of the experiment to acquire a large eared breed of French sheep. Husband engaged in the manufacture of cells, but lost in size. When the lamb grew up, it became cramped in the house, which was designed for a male of normal size. We had to urgently make another cell, because our Boris was very large. Now we will know that the higher and wider the house – the better! ”
When self-fabricating cells, it is important to take everything into account: the climate, the size of buildings and materials, which should not be harmful and toxic. The health of pets and their successful reproduction directly depends on both nutrition and living conditions.
