Breeding rabbits is a fairly profitable business. As they say, a rabbit is not only valuable fur, but also a couple of kilograms of expensive dietary meat. Therefore, if you decide to start breeding rabbits, it is advisable to find a place of sale not only for fur, but also for meat, for example, restaurants or cafes.
A great advantage when developing a business of this kind is that a lot can be done independently, significantly reducing the cost of acquiring fixed assets. The most important thing to do is to build cages for rabbits.
Cells are low rectangular drawers with doors, rather long and wide. There are many versions of the houses for rabbits: with walking, with separate feeders, cages for single or group animals.
But to start a business, you will need the simplest cage that will allow rabbits to gain weight quickly and multiply actively.
Preparation of tools and material
So, what we need in order to make a cage for a rabbit with his own hands:
- Wooden boards. A frame will be made of them, and a grid will be attached to them. The width of the board should be 5 cm, and thickness – 2.5 cm;
- Metal grid. The cell size should be no more than 1.25 x 1.25 cm. If the cell size is larger, then rabbit legs can fall into it, which will lead to injuries and, as a result, to the death of rabbits. It is undesirable to use a solid flooring board, it will negatively affect ventilation in the cage and worsen sanitary conditions;
- Roofing sheet metal with dimensions 117 x 270 cm;
- Naturally, we need screws, nails, both large and small;
- Tools: saw, scissors for metal, hammer, nail puller.
If all the tools and materials are available, you can proceed to the assembly of the structure. Making a cage with your own hands is not difficult, just follow the instructions carefully and carefully look at the drawing diagrams.
Fabrication and trim cell cage
Take the boards that will serve as supports or legs. The type of wood does not matter, but conifers or oak are not recommended – it’s hard to work with them. Boards need to be cut so that you get two legs about 152 cm long, and two legs 137 cm long. Be sure to process them on the machine so as not to drive a splinter into your hand during the process.
Build the frame to which the supports will be attached. You can see the arrangement of the boards for the frame in the picture.
The side plank should be 79 cm long, and the front and back planks should be 238.5 cm. Between the side planks, additional bars are fastened – reinforcing edges made of wood. They must divide the frame into 3 equal rectangles, the stride length is 76.5 cm. The frame is nailed with the help of nails, after which it is connected to the supports. The frame is fixed approximately 81 cm from the base of the support. By the way, so that the supports do not rot over time, the base can be upholstered with rubber from an old tire.
Now you need to fix the metal grid on the frame. With the help of scissors for metal, a piece of the required size is cut out of the grid, then it is fixed on the sides so that the cusps do not hurt the rabbits when they run around the cage. Gently, bypassing the support from all sides, securely fix the grid with self-tapping screws.
Now you need to make the side walls. They are made of the same wood, with a 5 cm wide rib and 2.5 cm thick. Pay attention to the picture.
As you can see, the cage will not be completely rectangular, its roof will be sloping, this is a necessary condition, since with this form of roof the rabbits will feel most comfortable, and if the cage is standing outside, then the sloping roof will protect it from external atmospheric influences.
After you make the side covers, you need to make partitions. They are made in the same way as the side walls, only empty inside. Inside the walls, the mesh is tensioned. Such cells are necessary for the rabbits to be separated from each other.
After the partitions and walls are ready, they can be installed in their place. This is done with the help of all the same hammer and nails. Note that the lower edges of the cage frame should completely coincide with the location of the partitions and side walls. For strength, a crossbar is nailed to the partitions and walls. It will increase the rigidity of the structure at the initial stage and facilitate your construction in the future.
Important point: make sure that the walls and partitions are strictly vertically, do not hesitate to use the level.
When everything is ready, feel free to lay the cage on its side and begin to build the back wall. This is not difficult, you just need to cut the desired size of the board and nail them to the back. You need to nail to all the ribs and side walls, so that the cell is tough and minimally reacts to careless handling.
When the back wall is finished, put the cage on the legs and nail the boards in front, according to the picture.
As you can see, they need to be nailed on top, as well as on each edge and on each wall. There is nothing to nail down from below.
Roof and door construction
You can mount the roof. Take a sheet of metal measuring 117 x 270 cm and cut the corners with scissors, as shown in the figure below.
Next, bend the sheet at the corners. Now the roof for the rabbit house should ideally fall into place. It is fastened with nails to all the ribs and side walls, and in addition, to the front wall and to the back. It should be noted that the edges of the front part of the roof should protrude by 15 cm, and the edges of the side part – by 7.5 cm beyond the cage. As a result, there should be a sort of barrier that will prevent water from leaking under the roof.
You can start building doors for the rabbit cage. Pay attention to the picture.
You will need boards with a thickness of 2.5 cm and a width of 5 cm. They are knocked down with nails, and after that exactly the same grid as on the floor and on the partitions is stretched on them. Then the doors are hinged to the cage so that they can open and close freely.
To securely lock the door, you can use the following types of locks, which are represented in the figures. The best option is a metal latch, the price-quality ratio is perfect!
Here, perhaps, are all the steps that must be performed when building a cage for rabbits. However, the problem remains with the food of fluffy animals. This problem can be solved as follows.
Organization of feeding rabbits
A small window is cut through the doors, in the net itself, into which the tin feeder is inserted. Thus, it will be possible to feed the rabbits without opening the cage.
We considered the simplest option of building a cell. But, if you have the strength and desire, you can look at other variants of cells, as in the figure below. In this cage at the same time can contain up to 9 – 12 rabbits!
The downside of such a construction is that the floor is made of a solid sheet of plywood, which means you will often have to clean the cage, otherwise unsanitary conditions can lead to the illness of rabbits.
Take care of the rabbits, feed them with fresh greens, make vaccinations on time, and only then you need not one cell, but as many as ten, to have where to place the future offspring!

The optimal mesh for the floor of rabbit cells is 16 × 48×2 mm. It is suitable for both young and adult rabbits. The smaller cell becomes more clogged and causes problems with cell cleaning.
The rabbit in this floor will not break his paw, even if he gets inside the cell, he will simply pull it out.
For walls, a grid with a cell of 24 × 48 × 2 mm or 32 × 48 × 2 mm is used. Also to reduce the cost of construction on the walls, you can take a grid of galvanized wire f1.6 mm or 1.8mm.
